Although I gotta say, I saw the character designs and I have a premonition that the kind, sweet and gentle-looking girl will win.What a surprising cliche.

Well 2008 has kicked the curb. Thank God for that. It hasn’t been a smooth ride; it was more trouble than anything else. 2009 will be a fresh start and I hope to make the best outta it. Anyway, we shall now go forth and do an obligatory anime meme. YAY!

BEST ANIME OF 2008.

Hands down, MACROSS FRONTIER. In all honesty, the anime wagon had been full of nonsensical crap. When Macross F came, it swept me away. It’s an anime that made me feel for the characters A LOT. It’s been such a long time since I rooted for characters, most of the time, I would just be blah watching other current animes. The scenes had impact. The music was orgasmic and the mecha pron was Rated R godly! 8D Gundam 00 comes by at second place. Because it’s Gundam. Third is True Tears.

WORST ANIME OF 2008

To LOVE-Ru and Kanokon share first place. Oh God. Do I have to really elaborate? No I don’t. It’s just bad. Second to this is Rosario + Vampire. Pointless story is pointless, as well as pointless fanservice.

BEST MALE CHARACTER

Yūto Ayase from Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu. Not exactly memorable but he’s the first one that comes to mind. Why? This guy just has so many likeable attributes. Just when you think he’s going to do a classic-move-a-male-protaganist-will-do-in-anime, he doesn’t. He always seems to know what to say and he only has eyes for one girl and doesn’t stray to the next big-breasted bimbo that comes his way. I know some will disagree with me but he has all the attributes that a girl would want for her boyfriend. Maybe his looks aren’t up to par but he’s personality and actions speak for him. Also he isn’t as wimpy as you’d initially think.

BEST FEMALE CHARACTER

Oh yeah. SHERYL NOME! Initially, I did not like Sheryl. I thought she was just another generic big-busted character who was self-centered and shallow. Many predicted she would just be the jealous manic rival of then-innocent and sweetly-tempered Ranka Lee. In the earlier start of the series, it wasn’t “cool” to be a Sheryl fan. However, we were all proven wrong by this character. Even Kawamori, the creator, was astounded by her (Heck! He admitted he hated Sheryl at the start but loved her along the way). Sheryl showed to be a character who was more than a pretty face (body…voice, etc.). She was strong, independent, self-reliant and capable, as well as passionate. She was a woman at the pinnacle of her career but despite it, she wanted to become a part in Alto’s life and supported her rival Ranka Lee to reach her dreams with no ill or malice towards the younger girl. She is a tsundere and is confident to the point of haughtiness but she shows genuine concern to those around her. In the series, you cannot dispute the fact that she is the most developed character. If you do, I can only ask you this…WTF is wrong with you?! Second to Sheryl is Noe.

MOST FAIL CHARACTER

Ranka Lee takes the pineapple cake for this. She had such a promising start, I even rooted for her. But God. She was FAIL. So much FAIL that I could not take and swallow. Her personality was gratingly annoying especially when she had the most screen time. Okay, yeah sure, she wasn’t mean like the “Sheryl bitch” (cue eye roll) but she was so immature. Her character suffered from horrible development and to think she had the biggest transition. Yeah sure, no doubt, some of you out there love Ranka and it must be painful to some that I cut her out like this. But face the pop music. If you cannot see how her character failed, well then I applaud you for your devotion (maybe it’s because of her green hair and loliness) but if you start making excuses (senseless ones at that) for her inexcusable actions than you’re as much of a fail of a character as her. One more time…FAIL.

OTP

Alto/Sheryl or popularly called as AruSheri (アルシェリ) wins. For about almost a decade, Asucaga had been my OTP on a pedestal. But when Alto and Sheryl came to light…the rest is history. I began liking this pairing in the Star Date episode and episode 6 sealed my love for this pairing. They are a couple of tsunderes who share chemistry and understanding. I am one of the believers that the last episode was a trick episode. I mean, seriously, after all that’s happened…suddenly there’s a reset button? Wishful thinking for harem-ending-lovers and Rankadogs is what I think. Like Ranka’s decision to fight for love and music will change Alto’s decision to stay with Sheryl. But hey, if you want to think Alto chose no one, I won’t fight you on that if that’s what makes you sleep at night.

SPECIAL AWARD

Definitely True Tears deserves this one. It was one hell of a whirlwind ride. Having you guessing and guessing who will end up with who. True Tears was a great series with one of the best dramatic scenes. I am still struck after a particular scene. Sniff. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.

BEST ANIME SONG

Surprise, surprise. Reflectia from True Tears and Diamond Crevasse from Macross Frontier share first place. I cannot choose which one I prefer over the other. XD
Reflectia makes me feel a certain emotion whenever I listen to it while Diamond Crevasse has such a meaningful impact.

Sigh. Well this is where I’ll go for now. Oh and because life took some toll on me, I couldn’t post the number one shoujo-scene. Might as well do it now…the winner would have to be this….

I don’t know with all of you out there, but the special episode of CLANNAD captured more emotion than the whole series itself. It had me feeling different emotions at one time. The series never gave me that. The confrontation between Tomoya and Tomoyo in the snow almost had me in tears. In a span of how many minutes, it teaches you what love is mostly about and that is sacrifices. Sure, the episode might have come cheesy or hurried to some, but what can you expect?

I consider myself a patient person. What with all the shit being thrown at me, I can take it very well without blowing my top off. But with some of the recent events that has happened in my life, you can only take soo much. Luckily, anime has always been my temporary escape from all the insanity. But man, I should really know better. Anime = more insanity. I open up my email to find it flooded with Ranka is awesome! Sheryl sucks! spam

WTF. Macross Fever still hasn’t died?!!

Basically its a few tl;dr rants about the magical beauty that is Ranka and why I, a Sheryl fan is a stupid retard to prefer the “big-boobed bimbo” over the sweet and innocent angel. They ask me why!  WHY?! Okay, I’ll tell you why…I have anger to burn and I’ll let it rage in pretty text.

BE WARNED. THIS IS NOT A RANKA-FRIENDLY POST. UNLESS YOU’RE A MASOCHIST, DON’T BOTHER.

No doubt, Ranka will be a part Macross history, but it doesn’t mean it will be in a favorable light. Believe it or not, I was rooting for Ranka in the earlier part of the series, I didn’t think much on Sheryl, as she was showing major negative-Minmay vibes that time. The date episode even sorta paralleled the one in DYRL! XDD

But as the series went on, Ranka’s lack of initiative was gnawing at me. I’ll take episode 10 for this case, I mean she mopes about how she didn’t know about Alto’s kabuki past but what does she do about it…NOTHING! XD Never even bothered to dig up any dish about her crush. All she could do was ask about Alto, his interest and hobbies but nooo….every conversation has to be about Ranka. By the time she shuts up about herself and asks something personal, it’s already late in the series! I mean, c’mon! O_O

Her ignorance is another thing as well. I mean, c’mon, how stupid can you get? Example for this is Ai-kun, if she had respected the Frontier laws, she’d have turned in Ai-kun and much disaster could have been avoided early on. But screw the rules, I’ll have meself a cute pet even if I don’t know what it is or why it isn’t listed or if it is dangerous. 8D

Her whining and spoiled me-me-me brat attitude didn’t help either (Her Ozma-abuse in ep. 4 screamed BRATZ!). Man, how self-centered can you get?

My favorite would have to be the parade. Okay, they give this all-out awesome parade for your honor and what do you do? Not show up for it! XDDDD Screw the fans, I’ll go find my pet because clearly it’s more important than all the little people who helped me become the next pop idol! XD LOL.
Her dependency. I shudder. They want to use your songs for a weapon? What is your decision? Look at Alto-kun and ask if I should go for it. Alto-kun said I should, so I shall! *Giggle* it will help me score brownie points with him as well, YAY! 8D
And if you can’t depend on Alto-kun because he broke your heart by just happening to be on the same roof with Sheryl, then depend on Kaifun Brera Sterne, extraordinaire! Oh and I don’t think I need to elaborate on her damsel-in-distress role. Help me!!!

Then here are the scenes that made Ranka sooo detestable:

Famous scene #1: Wow, Ranka. You sure couldn’t sing well when your heart was broken because your in-your-delusions-boyfriend Alto and Sheryl happened to be standing on the same roof but your song sure did save everyone even after Michel was gutted before your very eyes. As you sang Aimo for the nth time, all you could think about was your stupid heartbreak and how Alto didn’t hear your cutesy pop songs, never mind that Michel’s death happened only a few hours ago. 8D

Famous scene #2: They want you to sing a song of mourning and hope. What do you do? Run away! Why me?…she asks. Yes indeed, why her?

Famous scene #3: I’m going away to Vajra-land to help stop the stupid fighting. It doesn’t matter that I’m making this up as I go. But surely I’ll be fine as I have Kaifun Brera, my cyborg guy! And I’m sure Frontier will be okay even if it’s hanging by a thread and my songs are the only decent weapons right now. But I know what I’m doing! Besides, I need a break…especially after my heartbreak…sniff.

Famous scene #4: (Just had to add this) Come with me to Vajra-land Alto! Just you and me–and Ai-kun too! Don’t worry Ai-kun is good Vajra, kk? Never mind your feelings of hatred especially after seeing Michel, your buddy, get impaled by a Vajra. Forget your obligations to protect Frontier! Come with me! X3

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Haruhi, I can’t breathe from laughing. There’s still plenty more to truck out but I unfortunately don’t have the time and luxury. University is a killer.

Okay, I’m being harsh. After all Ranka is just a little girl, as how her rabid fans will put it. But I certainly didn’t watch the show for the shoujo life of Ranka Lee. I watched it for the story…oh my VF. Ranka failed as a heroine. Talk about being consistent in being static, rofl.

Well not everyone is perfect. People make mistakes. But in anime and fiction, you can only tolerate so much before you throw in the towel. XD

Ah, I feel better now.

Oh and yes, to a certain cult of Rankanism…Congratulations! You have only fanned the flames of Ranka-hate to a whole new level. 8D

The frustration is pretty understandable. C'mon, majority of us have been watching this show for the love triangle. The mecha porn was a bonus--speaking of which, the dogfights were awesome! XD

After I calmed down, I did some rethinking about the series and I realized that the open-ending wasn't really an open-ending (in terms of the triangle only, lots of stuff still need to be explained like the whole Galaxy and Minmei thing). Alto/Sheryl is pretty much solid for me. C'mon, go back to 24 and I dare you to say that Alto wasn't going to confess. Also, The salute scene was the best homage to Hikaru and Misa of DYRL. XD And the part where Ranka says she won't lose? Pfft. Typical line from a losing side of the triangle in shoujo.

My props to Kawamori. He is a troll but he is awesome. Hopefully, the movie will leave us with a more concrete acknowledgement to the Alto/Sheryl ship (call me a smug and bias shipper all you want but that's how I am. I don't pretend unlike a lot of posters).
