Whether it be fighting baddies or trying to pass Math, there are certain rules to follow in this shoujo world.
#1 – Shoujo girls aren’t bright
Smart and average-brained girls are boring. Let’s go low and give her the IQ so damn low, even a dog can surpass it. Of course to make up for the lack of smarts, is the goodie-goodieness and love for others in her heart. That goodie-goodieness will then pierce through the heart of her tsundere lover-boy, who is usually the most popular, smartest, athletic, guy in school.
Also being not-so-bright gives you a privilege to be tutored by the hottie of your shoujo dreams, one of the oldest plot devices ever invented since the dawn of paper plates (which is…I don’t know when).
And hey! If your shoujo heroine isn’t smart then make her a Mary Sue XD. But that’s a different story already.
One of the few girls I can forgive with this fault is Miyuu Nanahara from Kare Made Love. Although she ranked low in her academics, she challenged herself and applied more in her studies (though at first she did it to impress the guy, which is quite a typical trend when you think about it >_>). Because of that she got better little by little and even got into the school’s top 100. I guess I’m a sucker for determined girls (kinda). I like her because she actually tries and gets results, while other shoujo girls whine about how stupid they are and only worry about snagging a boyfriend. Go figure.
